PRESS RELEASE

PROPOSED 2017 MILLAGE RATES FOR UNINCORPORATED, INCORPORATED & HOSPITAL

The Jasper County Board of Commissioners announces its intention to increase the property taxes it will levy this year by 3.14 percent (over the rollback rate) in the Unincorporated, Incorporated, and Hospital county areas.  The proposed millage rate is as follows:

                County-Wide Incorporated /Unincorporated                 16.446

                Hospital                                                                                     .918

Total County-Wide and Hospital Millage Rate:              17.364

Each year, the Board of Tax Assessors is required to review the assessed value of taxable property in the county.  When the trend of prices on properties that have recently sold in the county indicates there has been an increase or decrease in the fair market value of specific property, the Board of Tax Assessors is required by law to re-determine the value of such property and increase or decrease the assessment.

When the total digest of taxable property is prepared, Georgia Law requires that a millage rate must be computed that will produce the same total revenue on the current year's new digest that last year's millage rate would have produced had no reassessments occurred.

The Jasper County Board of Commissioners has proposed to adopt a millage rate higher than the rollback rate; the millage rate will be finalized on Thursday, June 22 at 6:00 PM.

The Dates and Times for the Public Hearings are as follows:

Monday, June 12                 9:00 AM

Monday, June 12                 6:00 PM

Monday, June 19                6:00 PM
